TOP TIP: Console tables have a lot less storage compared to sideboards due to the slim nature of their design. If storage is a must but you don’t have room for a storage unit, you can always store items in the open space underneath, either stacked or tidied away in stylish boxes.
Address shape and scale to the console table. Visual interest can be created with contrasting shapes. If you have a lot of square or rectangle objects such a books, trays and boxes, place an object either on top or next to them that’s round or cylindrical for contrast. Also introduce objects that vary in height to bring visual weight to the vignette and help to create balance. Remember to keep it simple – don’t over-clutter. Allow white space for the eye to rest.
In a dining room, a console table can be a useful place to display your favourite china or crystal glass. Having a console in your dining space is also an ideal spot for placing any extra dining chairs that aren’t in use around your dining table. This way, the chairs will not look lost or clutter the space but rather create another stylish seating area.
Average Heights. Most console tables range in height from 26 to 36 inches. The difference in height depends on the style and age of the table. Longer tables generally run taller to keep proportions balanced. Antique console tables, such as the heavy and ornate pieces of Louis XIV are higher, while sleek, Mid-Century Modern styles average much shorter. Most modern consoles fall in the 29 to 33 inch range.
