They come with a multitude of different bases such as a trestle, full-frame,sculptural or plinth, and can be made from materials such as wood, glass, concrete, natural stone, metals such as brass or bronze, they can also be clad with mirror, leather or shagreen (stingray leather).
Average Heights. Most console tables range in height from 26 to 36 inches. The difference in height depends on the style and age of the table. Longer tables generally run taller to keep proportions balanced. Antique console tables, such as the heavy and ornate pieces of Louis XIV are higher, while sleek, Mid-Century Modern styles average much shorter. Most modern consoles fall in the 29 to 33 inch range.
Measuring Tables. To determine the right height for a console table, take measurements in the space you intend to use it. If you’re placing the table behind a sofa, measure the height of the sofa back. A console table should be level with the sofa or about 1 inch below it. For entry tables or dining room buffets, look for console tables that are around 33 inches tall. This average height allows most people to comfortably access its tabletop.
One of the great features of a console table is that they’re not restricted to one room. If you’ve got an empty space in your home, chances are a console table would fill it nicely!
