Average Heights. Most console tables range in height from 26 to 36 inches. The difference in height depends on the style and age of the table. Longer tables generally run taller to keep proportions balanced. Antique console tables, such as the heavy and ornate pieces of Louis XIV are higher, while sleek, Mid-Century Modern styles average much shorter. Most modern consoles fall in the 29 to 33 inch range.
If your console is sitting up against a wall in an entry way, you may wish to hang an artwork on a mirror above it. An artwork can make a grand opening statement for your home and is a great way to introduce colour and reflect your personality. A mirror opens up an area to create a sense of space, it will also help to reflect light and create a brighter feel, while providing a place to check your hair before you rush out the door. Tip: When selecting an artwork or mirror just be sure that the size works well with the scale and colour of the wall, the console and the other objects you are adding to the console.
A high gloss console table will allow you to brighten up your space alongside adding a smooth and wonderfully reflective finish.
Until the reign of Louis XVI. consoletables were almost invariably gilded, but they then began to be painted usually in gris-perle, and by degrees they came to be manufactured in rose-wood and mahogany. Although much used in England the console has never been thoroughly acclimatized there; that it has always retained a foreign flavour is indicated by the fact that, unlike most other pieces of furniture, it has failed to commend itself to any but the richer classes.
