Along with an entry or hallway, a console table can also work well in other rooms of the home. It can act as beautiful addition to a dining room and living room by helping to define an area and also by creating a visual balance against heavier items of furniture such as the dining table or sofa for example. It is an important piece that can act as a ‘finishing touch’ to help a room to feel complete.
If you’re planning on placing a console in your hallway, space awareness is key. You don’t want guests entering your home and bumping straight into your table! Keep in mind that the average hallway is around 90 -100cm in width, with the majority of console tables measuring between 30cm and 40cm in depth. Based on these measurements, this allows for plenty of room to walk past but it’s always important to check.
Any size or style of console will do, from a glamorous metallic model to a rustic weathered-wood design. For this example, we chose a streamlined black-and-gold console inset with glass. One consideration: A lower shelf means double the styling potential, so consider how many pieces you want to display when choosing your table.
If your home is modern avoid heavily ornate pieces and opt for something with clean lines. If your home is more classic, a combination of brass or bronze base with glass top could work well. Selecting something in a light neutral colour will work best in a smaller, darker spaces.
